FAQs about RFID Inlays

What are RFID tag inlays?

They are the heart of an RFID tag. They consist of a microchip connected to an antenna, both attached to a thin, flexible substrate. They are the functional part before being converted into a final tag with a protective cover and, often, adhesive.

What is the difference between an inlay and a finished RFID tag?

An inlay is the “raw” form of the label, without the protective layer or adhesive that facilitates placement. The finished label includes these additional layers to make it more durable and easier to use.

What materials are the inlays made of?

Generally, the chip is made of silicon and the antenna is made of aluminum or copper, deposited on a substrate of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) or other flexible materials.

For which applications are they suitable?

Inlays are a critical component for a wide range of RFID applications, including inventory management, asset tracking, human and animal identification, access control and many others.
