RFID, the Radio Frequency Identification Technology

The digitization and traceability of products and processes by means of RFID technology, which allows, by means of radio frequency identification, the connectivity of the supply chain, automatically, remotely and in real time, is becoming more and more common among a variety of sectors. Myruns is a specialist in the most advanced RFID identification technology. Find out what it is and how it works.

What is RFID?

RFID, which stands for Radio Frequency IDentification, is a technology whose function is the remote identification (up to 15 meters) of people, objects and/or animals.

The particularity of RFID technology is that it does not require a visual field and can read up to 1000 IDs per second, which allows automation in identification and traceability processes, considerably reducing identification times and eliminating human errors.

How does
RFID technology work?

RFID technology works through various devices that are responsible for processing the signal. There are essential components to implement a basic RFID environment, as well as more specific and more complex products , designed as a response to certain issues of specific markets.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags facilitate the recognition of objects to ensure their traceability wirelessly. The tags incorporate a chip to which the necessary information is added for subsequent printing and engraving. There are 3 types of RFID tags according to the type of frequency in which they operate:

Passive TAG The tag has no battery and responds as a passive element by reflecting the read signal. The tag consists of an aluminum antenna and an IC. Its reading range can reach up to 15 meters.

Semi-passive TAG The tag has a battery connected to the IC. It acts as a passive element, but at the moment of signal reflection it injects energy to reach further (30 meters) or carry heavier information (e.g. temperature).

Active TAG The tag has a connected battery and acts as an active element constantly emitting a signal that can be read by the reading system at a range of up to 100 meters.

The readers receive and process the radio signal and transmit it to the computer in a comprehensible form. The antennas are a link between the tag and the reader. Their function is to emit a radio frequency signal which, when reflected on the tag, collects the information (identification code) of the tag. Conventional fixed reader The tag does not have a battery and responds as a passive element reflecting the reading signal. The tag consists of an aluminum antenna and an IC. Its reading range can reach up to 15 meters. Mobile reader The tag has a connected battery and acts as an active element constantly emitting a signal that can be read by the reading system at a range of up to 100 meters.

Its purpose is the adaptation of RFID technology to the medium or application. The reading system can be given in multiple options or formats: Arches, poles, reading tunnel, integrated in shelves, furniture…etc.

In addition, we can find products that use an RFID antenna and a reader under its housing. These products alone comprise a reading system.
